He is a third-generation owner who has been working together in the 90-year-old HVAC company since 2007. Dave earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Engineering from Iowa State University in 1984. His wife’s degree is in the biological sciences.

Dave Coziahr

They run a small HVAC company with a strong reputation for solving seemingly unsolvable problems. In fact, Dave will tell you that he has always wanted to learn more, do more, and help more when it comes to solving customer comfort problems.

He, his father, and his grandfather have always focused on education and training, delivering optimal HVAC systems to clients for three generations. Today, we call that High-Performance HVAC™ contracting.

Their “mom-and-pop” approach doesn’t mean they are less than other companies that are much bigger in annual sales.

In fact, it’s quite the opposite. High-Performance HVAC contracting often conjures images of sophisticated installations, advanced diagnostic tools and training, and large, well-staffed firms with the resources to test, measure, and document everything they do.

Small Contracting Firms Rock

However, the truth is that small contracting firms do some of the most innovative and precise work in our industry, with craftspeople who view every job as both a challenge and an opportunity to create something exceptional. Such is the case with Coziahr Heating and Air Conditioning of Council Bluffs, IA. Coziahr Heating really only has two employees – Dave and his wife – and is one of the smallest High-Performance HVAC companies in the National Comfort Institute family.

Performance isn’t just a business goal – it’s a family legacy. Dave uses that legacy to reach out to others within the industry to help them reach for the stars. That includes being active in hands-on career education in HVAC, serving as a speaker in HVAC work-based learning district programs, and engaging high school students in career exploration by exposing them to real-world training labs and HVAC concepts.

Plus, he dedicates time to bridging the gap between education and the trades. This time means helping high school students understand career pathways outside of traditional college tracks and supporting the “pipeline” for the industry’s future workforce.

Within the HVAC trade, Coziahr is an active member of National Comfort Institute who dedicates himself to continuous education and certification. And then he shares his knowledge by mentoring others, both in schools and in the HVAC industry.

Coziahr’s community-first service supports customers and neighbors in practical and yet personal ways. That combination makes him a strong example of a High-Performance HVAC contractor who operates as a true community stakeholder rather than just a business owner.

And that is why the team at NCI and at High-Performance HVAC Today magazine selected him to be part of the Class of 2026 Influencers.
