Rob Falke Servant Leader Award
John Boylan of Lakeside Service Company in Brighton, MI, was recognized by NCI in this with the Rob Falke Servant Leader award. According to NCI CEO Dominick Guarino, Boylan, the general manager at Lakeside, is a force for change.
The award criteria includes:
- Are always ready to help others and encourage them to succeed
- Serve the people they manage or lead with humility and grace
- Put others ahead of self in terms of giving credit and praising achievement
- Foster leadership in others.
NCI presents this award to someone who goes beyond doing their job to help others in the HVAC Industry. It is named in honor of NCI’s President, Rob Falke, who passed away in 2022. According to Guarino, Falke was the epitome of the servant leader.
“John helped bring NCI training to Lakeside Service in 2000, but by his admission, they didn’t get going with making it part of their culture until 2008,” Guarino says. “Still, his goal was to ensure everyone in the company was certified in several NCI high-performance disciplines. He has kept that commitment for the past 16 years, virtually shutting down most of the company for onsite training – usually twice a year!
“Today, he is at the organization’s helm, with many responsibilities,” Guarino continues. “Yet he still maintains an attitude of servant leadership, putting the good of his team ahead of his own aspirations. John is a change agent for his organization, always looking for ways to take their customer service and deliver top-performing systems to the next level.”
Spirit of Excellence Award
NCI introduced this new award in 2024 and presented it to Corrie Johnson, whose husband, of Tom Johnson, president of TM Johnson Brothers in Grandy, MN, who passed away earlier this year.
This award was created to recognize extraordinary individuals who have dedicated a significant part of their careers to raising the professional bar in the HVAC industry. These people do NOT have to be HVAC contractors but must be part of the industry and work to go above and beyond what their daily professions require.
“It’s about creating a more professional and dynamic industry overall while helping individual members of the industry in their pursuit of excellence,” says NCI CEO Dominick Guarino.
“It is my honor and privilege to introduce this year’s Spirit of Excellence Award winner posthumously to someone who spent his life serving others and pursuing excellence in everything he did.
“”Tom was a fantastic individual in our industry and his personal life. He nurtured his company and grew it into a phenomenal High-Performance business. His passion was combustion and carbon monoxide safety, and he ensured everyone in the company was trained and certified in those two disciplines,” Guarino adds.
“He became so passionate about spreading the word about Carbon Monoxide and Combustion testing that in 2018, he became an NCI instructor. Despite suffering severe health problems later in his life, Tom stayed positive and was unwavering in his love of life and his faith.”
